I was using an ssb without pads for a front squat bar prior to this purchase. That worked somewhat well except for the need to focus more on preventing the weight from shifting than driving the bar up. This bar solved that problem. I also used runner loops (climbing gear) for straps on a barbell for front squats, but that allowed the entire load to shift at times. Especially if doing max efforts with any hip dominance. No shifting with this bar. All it is is a stable, comfortable, safe alternative when my wrists are worn out or I otherwise can't rack a bar. The bar is very light, allowing a lighter start for some lifters, such as the injured or novices. Simple spring clamps work well for collars. Great for things like fat bar curls. I also like it for axle pin presses.
